Solar Panel Installation in Maryland

Maryland offers some of the strongest solar incentives on the East Coast, making it one of the best states in the country for going solar. With electricity rates that have surged 37% since 2021, full retail rate net metering, and a lucrative SREC market, Maryland homeowners can save significantly by switching to solar. At IntegrateSun, we help you maximize every available incentive to get the best return on your solar investment.

Why Maryland is Perfect for Solar

  • Electricity Rates Have Surged 37% Maryland's average electricity rate jumped from 13.1 cents per kWh in 2021 to 17.9 cents in 2024, a 37% increase that now exceeds the national average. Solar panels generate power at a fixed cost, protecting your household from these ongoing rate hikes.

  • One of the Best Net Metering Policies in the Country Maryland requires all utilities, including BGE, Pepco, and Delmarva, to credit solar owners at the full retail rate for excess energy sent to the grid. This is a true 1-to-1 credit structure, meaning every kWh you export is worth the same as every kWh you buy. Credits roll over indefinitely

  • Earn Ongoing Income Through SRECs Maryland's Solar Renewable Energy Credit program allows you to earn one SREC for every 1,000 kWh your system produces. At current market rates of $55-80 per SREC, a typical residential system can generate $330-$1,000+ per year in additional income for the first 15 years of operation. Under the Brighter Tomorrow Act (2024), certified SRECs receive a 1.5x price multiplier for qualifying systems.

  • Strong Tax Exemptions Maryland offers both a sales tax exemption (saving 6% on equipment) and a property tax exemption for solar installations. Several counties, including Anne Arundel (up to $2,500), Baltimore County (up to $5,000), and Harford County, offer additional local property tax credits on top of the state exemption.

Solar Incentives in Maryland

Full Retail Rate Net Metering
Maryland law requires BGE, Pepco, Delmarva, and SMECO to credit solar exports at the full retail rate (approximately 17.5 cents per kWh as of 2026). Credits carry forward indefinitely and can be cashed out annually in April at a lower generation rate.

Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs)

Maryland's SREC market pays approximately $55-80 per certificate. You earn one SREC for every MWh (1,000 kWh) of solar production. SRECs are earned for the first 15 years of your system's operation. A typical 8 kW system producing 9,000-10,000 kWh/year earns 9-10 SRECs annually, generating $500-$800 per year in additional income.

Maryland Solar Access Program (MSAP)

Established by the Brighter Tomorrow Act of 2024, MSAP provides grants of $750 per kW of installed solar capacity for income-qualified homeowners. Applications are subject to funding availability.

Sales and Property Tax Exemptions

Maryland exempts solar equipment from the 6% state sales tax, saving approximately $1,200 on a $20,000 system. The state also provides a property tax exemption for the added value from solar installations.

County-Level Tax Credits

Anne Arundel County offers up to $2,500 in property tax credits for solar. Baltimore County offers up to $5,000. Harford and Prince George's counties also offer solar tax credits. Check with your local tax authority for current availability.

Third-Party Ownership (TPO) Options

Solar leases and PPAs are widely available in Maryland. Combined with the state's strong net metering and SREC programs, Maryland solar economics are among the best in the nation even without the federal residential credit.

Note: The 30% federal residential solar tax credit (Section 25D) expired on December 31, 2025. However, homeowners in Maryland can still access federal incentive value through Third-Party Ownership options like solar leases and PPAs, where the financing company claims the Section 48E commercial credit and passes savings through lower monthly payments.
